B
Definition
Standard operating days (Monday through Friday), excluding federal and state holidays. This is the metric used to calculate required notice periods for booking trips.
Overview
Why it Matters
Most NEMT programs require "2 Business Days' Notice" for a routine trip. Understanding this definition is vital for determining if a trip is "Routine" or "Urgent" (which may require special authorization).
How it Works
If a trip is requested on Friday for a Monday appointment, that is 0 Business Days notice (since Sat/Sun don't count), not 3 days.
Code Comparison
Comparison: Business Day vs. Calendar Day
Calendar Days include weekends. Business Days do not. A requirement of "48 Business Hours" is much longer than "48 Hours."
Common Questions
- Denials: Requesting a trip on Thursday for Monday and having it denied as "Late Notice" because it didn't meet the 2-business-day rule.
- Holiday impact: Forgetting that a Monday holiday pushes the deadline back to the previous Wednesday.
- Configure booking software to automatically flag trips as "Urgent/Late Notice" based on business day logic, not calendar logic.
- Educate facilities/social workers on the difference to prevent friction.
