Definition
A vehicle specifically modified to transport passengers who remain seated in a wheelchair. It must meet ADA specifications, including a hydraulic lift or ramp, raised roof (usually), and 4-point tie-down securement systems.
Overview
Why it Matters
This is the defining asset of the NEMT industry. It bridges the gap between a taxi and an ambulance.
How it Works
The driver deploys the lift/ramp. The passenger rolls in. The driver secures the wheelchair frame to the floor tracks using straps (Q'Straint/Sure-Lok) and applies the shoulder/lap belt.
Code Comparison
Comparison: Wheelchair Van vs. Stretcher Van
Wheelchair Van: Patient sits upright. (Billing Code A0130).
Stretcher Van: Patient lies flat. (Billing Code T2005 or A0130+modifiers depending on state).
Common Questions
- Lift Failure: Mechanical breakdown of the hydraulic lift while a patient is half-raised (dangerous and traumatic).
- Weight Limits: Trying to load a bariatric electric wheelchair (600lbs) onto a standard lift rated for 500lbs.
- Carry manual override tools for the lift in every vehicle.
- Inspect tie-down straps daily for fraying or damage.
