M
Definition
A report from the state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) documenting a driver's driving history, including traffic violations, license status, accidents, and vehicular crimes.
Overview
Why it Matters
Insurance carriers and Brokers require a "Clean MVR" for all drivers. A driver with a DUI or reckless driving charge is uninsurable and disqualified from NEMT.
How it Works
The provider pays a fee to the DMV (or a background check vendor) to pull the record annually or quarterly.
Code Comparison
Comparison: MVR vs. Background Check
MVR: Traffic history (Speeding tickets, suspended license).
Background Check: Criminal history (Theft, assault, sex offender registry).
Common Questions
- The "Rolling" Violation: A driver gets a speeding ticket after you hired them. If you only check MVR once a year, they could be driving for 11 months with a suspended license.
- Out-of-State Licenses: Checking the MVR in the current state but failing to check the MVR in the state where they lived 3 months ago.
- Enroll in a Continuous MVR Monitoring service that alerts you instantly if a driver gets a ticket or suspension.
- Set strict internal standards (e.g., "No more than 2 moving violations in 3 years").
